Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the oldest, most important spices known to humankind. Turmeric is bitter, astringent and pungent in taste, and has a heating quality. Due to its heating quality, turmeric helps to balance Kapha and Vata doshas (mind-body types), and due to its bitter taste, it helps to balance the Pitta dosha, thus making it tri-doshic. Turmeric is also beneficial for helping with occasional congestion, soothing a hoarse voice or the occasional cough, and easing feelings of heaviness in the head due to a Kapha imbalance.

According to ayurveda, this herb:

  • Is an antioxidant that balances Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas (mind-body types)

Tulsi

Tulsi, also known as "Holy Basil," has been used by many cultures around the world for thousands of years. Described in the Vedas as the most sacred holy plant of India, it was traditionally used in religious ceremonies and ayurvedic formulas. Called "the wonder herb," it's a common ingredient in ayurvedic throat syrup to soothe the occasional cough. In Africa it was traditionally used to support the colon's natural ability to remove parasites. American colonists used tulsi to ease occasional head discomfort.

Tulsi is pungent, bitter, light, dry, and has a heating quality. It balances Kapha and Vata doshas (mind-body types), but can slightly increase the Pitta dosha. Tulsi has specific benefits for the respiratory system, or pranavaha srotas. Its heating and sharp qualities help liquefy mucus, making it beneficial for the occasional cough, the respiratory system and the body's natural response to allergens. Combined with honey, the juice works well for hiccups.

Neem

The neem tree has long been revered in India for its numerous benefits. For centuries, the Indian people used the juice of neem leaves to make their skin look more radiant, drank neem tea as a tonic, used neem to clean their teeth, and used neem leaves as a natural bug repellent. Because of its wide variety of applications, it is commonly called "the village pharmacy."

Neem leaf is famous in ayurvedic texts for having an almost magical effect on the skin. Traditionally used in ayurvedic remedies for its purifying quality, the neem leaves were crushed into a paste and applied directly to problem skin.

Neem leaf has both pungent and astringent tastes. According to Maharishi Ayurveda, the neem leaf is especially useful in balancing Vata dosha (one of 3 mind-body types in ayurveda). It helps remove ama and other toxins from the body, helps purify the blood, and helps neutralize damaging free radicals, thus nourishing more radiant skin.

According to ayurveda, this herb:
